The survey of 2,000 people conducted by online electrical retailer, AO.com (opens in new tab), unveiled the top features people would like to have in their dream garden.

  1. BBQ / OUTDOOR KITCHEN Kitchens that flow between house and garden offer better light, views and a welcoming entertaining space all summer long. The indoor/outdoor kitchen is a modern-day phenomena but one that has markedly changed the way we plan both our kitchens and gardens. It was back in the 1970s that we first embraced the patio and barbecue and now, the huge rise of the kitchen extension has seen this part of the garden invariably designed in tandem with the new room. 2. OUTDOOR LIGHTING Gone are the days when the last rays of evening sun signalled a quick retreat indoors as the garden descended into darkness. Today, there are legions of lighting options that allow us to transform what was formerly a foreboding black space into a magical landscape, complete with colour, beams and a variety of effects, whilst also providing safe passage down steps and through pathways.
  3. SWIMMING POOL Bring out your inner waterbaby with a compact swim spa for tiny terraces, infinity pools for panoramas and natural swim ponds for landscaped grounds. Install a heated pool in a sunny, sheltered spot close to the house and kitchen or dining area to create a holiday at home experience. See:Garden trends for 2020 – The latest garden design ideas
  4. OUTDOOR FURNITURE Start by measuring your outdoor area and deciding what type of furniture will best suit your needs and lifestyle – a bistro two-seater table and chairs is perfect for romantic al fresco dining on a city balcony, whereas a large sofa set is a good choice for a sociable family household. Choose garden furniture that will stand the test of time by investing in a high quality product, but remember to care for it properly to make it last. Where possible, aim to try before you buy to ensure the seats are comfy and the finish of the materials is what you’re expecting. Take a look online before purchasing to read reviews, too.
  5. HOT TUB It is easy to see why hot tubs have soared in popularity. With more and more of us spending time in our homes, it is understanding that people are craving the added luxury of a home spa experience.
