But what exactly does this pantry idea involve? And how can you get involved the Studio McGee way? In discussion with H&G, Shea revealed what you need to know.
Shea McGee’s decanting trend
Decanting may be best associated with wine, but as Shea suggests, it has its place in the pantry too. The trend involves removing food items from their wrapping and placing them in matching containers for a seamless aesthetic. ‘Using jars and canisters in your kitchen or pantry is a simple way to elevate the feeling of your space and make even the simplest of ingredients worth putting on display,’ Shea says.‘I like using jars for the essentials like oats, flour, and sugar and styling them on the kitchen countertop or in open shelving for everyday access.’ Decanting is the simplest – but arguably the most impactful step in organizing a pantry, but as Shea suggests, the trend has a purpose beyond your pantry door.
1. Use jars to style your shelves
Shea expands on the decanting trend in her blog (opens in new tab), explaining that you should use jars and canisters to accentuate everyday ingredients. ‘You can style them anywhere from the pantry to your countertop to open shelving,’ Shea says. She adds that, alongside their good looks, they will maintain the food’s freshness for longer.
2. Experiment with baskets – and glass containers
Thoughts of the decanting trend may include visions of glass containers and jars. However, Shea urges you to expand your kitchen storage ideas to include baskets. ‘Try using them to store loose snacks for grab-and-go access, under the sink to store cleaning products, or in open shelving to store extra kitchen linens,’ Shea suggests. The designer adds that the containers will make your pantry feel more coherent – and consequently easier to navigate. This pantry storage idea is a trend that is certainly here to stay.
