This once timeless bathroom idea has lost its attraction for many interior designers in favor of darker and bolder features – from richly-toned basins to brass bathtubs. But is this really the end of the white bathtub? Here is everything you need to know. ‘I see white basins and tubs slowly declining in design. Nowadays, there are so many innovative and creative options to choose from,’ says Florida-based designer Brittany Farinas of House of One Interior Design (opens in new tab). ‘Mixing metals has been a big trend lately. I think people will be less afraid to do this in their own home – I’m personally a huge fan of this trend. Beautiful compositions come out of taking risks.’ Recent statistics support this shifting bathroom trend toward a more stylish and bold bathtub. Bathroom experts BC Designs (opens in new tab) revealed that they have also seen the demand for its luxury baths rocket in the last year. Sales of its copper boat bath (opens in new tab) rose by 40% in 2020 alone, a significant increase considering it is one of the brand’s most luxurious bathtubs. Further to the increasing demand for metallic finishes, designer Marlaina Teich of Marlaina Teich Designs (opens in new tab) suggests that white has lost its popularity to make way for darker colored pieces. These darker shades look set to be shaping the future of modern bathroom ideas. ‘All-white bathrooms are not as popular – color and texture are making exciting design possibilities,’ Marlaina explains. ‘Matte black finishes – plumbing fixtures (faucets, shower body), light fixtures, vanity lights are having a moment,’ she says. These dark bathroom ideas are further celebrated by designer Joseph A. Tsedaka, Principal at NOMI (opens in new tab), who suggests that dark bathrooms with colors such as charcoal are on the horizon. ‘If you include speakers, this often creates a tonal look, which is very sleek and clean and as a result of minimal distractions so you can relax,’ he adds.
