Avocado handcrafts its products with all-natural and organic materials, including GOLS organic certified latex (harvested from their own tree farms), GOTS organic and OEKO-TEK Standard 100 certified wool (from their own sheep farms), and GOTS organic certified cotton. The Avocado Green Organic Latex Mattress Topper (opens in new tab) is made from durable and sustainable Dunlop latex. It’s bound to give your bed a new lease on life without having to purchase a new mattress. Available in either a firm or plush version for gentle support or a cloud-like feel, it will upgrade the comfort of your existing mattress by contouring to your body’s natural curves with added cushioning. I opted to try the plush topper alongside my experience with the brand’s flagship Avocado Green Mattress, which is on the firmer side. I noticed immediately how it enhanced my sleeping experience. The bed still feels firm - which I prefer - but it now has a more cushioning layer to relieve pressure points and support my body’s natural curves. In this coming review, I’ll get into the details about why we rate the Avocado mattress topper as one of the best mattress toppers on the market! I’ve found that the Avocado mattress topper is a great option for those who want something comfortable and its eco-friendly construction aligns with those who want to live life more sustainably.

Who will the Avocado mattress topper suit?

Those looking to change the feel of their mattress:  firm up a too-soft mattress with the Firm topper - or soften up a too-hard mattress with the Plush topper. Those who want to try Avocado without buying a mattress: It offers similar benefits as an Avocado mattress at a fraction of the priceEco-conscious people looking to purchase organic or fair trade products: It comes with a host of environmental certifications, and Avocado itself is a Carbon Negative company (the first mattress company to be Carbon Neutral), and was recently rated as one of B Corp’s “Best For the World” companies in the Community category. Those with allergies or asthma: It’s naturally hypoallergenic and shouldn’t cause any irritations.

What’s the Avocado Mattress Topper like to sleep on?

Overall comfort and firmness Since the Avocado topper comes in both a plush (soft) version and a firm version, you can create your own comfort. For example, if you’re a side sleeper, you’ll likely find the plush version most comfortable and, if you’re a stomach sleeper or just looking for more support, you’ll likely prefer the firm version. I chose the plush version of the topper and find it creates a cloud-like feel when sleeping without that sinking feeling.  Pressure Relief and Support The plush version of the Avocado mattress topper conforms comfortably to whichever part of the body is putting the most pressure on it.  It evenly supports you while hugging your natural curves. In terms of pressure relief, I noticed I woke up pain-free and wasn’t as stiff as I had been when waking up previously - it really does feel plush without that sinking feeling that you may typically find with memory foam toppers. While I didn’t sleep on the firm version, it should provide the kind of support needed for spinal relief, especially for those who sleep on their backs.  Breathability and cooling The Avocado topper is made from Dunlop latex, which is naturally cooler than memory foam and mimics the cushioning layers of the brand’s mattress. It’s filled with GOTS organic certified wool, which has singular thermoregulation properties meant to wick away moisture and allow air to circulate naturally. This should keep you cool when it’s warm out and warm when it’s cool out. The latex is also ventilated and naturally breathable, adding to the topper’s cooling effects  Motion Isolation Due to the slight springiness of the latex, you may feel some motion if your partner gets in and out of bed, but the Avocado mattress topper’s design and materials offer adequate support for normal movements during sleep. If you’re a very light sleeper, however, this topper may not provide strong enough motion isolation. In this case, a memory foam mattress topper may be better. I personally found that the second comfort layer of latex over my mattress absorbed a great deal of motion - particularly my boyfriend’s tossing and turning - and my sleep remained largely undisturbed.

Avocado Mattress Topper design and construction

Avocado’s Organic Latex Mattress Topper is made with natural and certified organic materials, including Dunlop GOLS organic certified latex, GOTS organic certified wool, and GOTS organic certified cotton.  Dunlop latex is touted to be naturally antimicrobial, cooler than memory foam, and more durable and sustainable than Talalay latex, another natural latex configuration that is also popular in mattresses and involves a more laborious production. The plush mattress topper uses one seamless layer of soft Dunlop latex (D65 / 14-19 ILD), while the firm mattress topper uses medium-firm Dunlop latex (D75 / 20-25 ILD). Avocado sources its wool from its own farms, which is non-allergenic, making it ideal for those who suffer allergies to feather, down, or synthetic materials. If you’re vegan, Avocado also has a Vegan Mattress Topper (opens in new tab) that is identical to the Green Mattress Topper, but uses cotton instead of wool. Finally, the cotton cover is made with 100% stretch organic cotton.  Avocado’s products are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified and free of any petroleum-based polyurethane foams, memory foams, chemical adhesives, or chemical fire retardants. Plus, the Avocado Green Topper is MADE SAFE Certified — a rigorous scientific screening process that only permits the use of ingredients that are not known or suspected to harm human health, animals, aquatic life, or ecosystems. While there aren’t any straps to secure the topper to the mattress, the bottom is made with an organic cotton canvas to help prevent slipping and is reinforced with double-stitched green tape edges and organic cotton tape along the bottom edge. I haven’t noticed any budging of the topper on my mattress, but other sleepers may find it insecure.

Ordering and delivery

The topper is available through the Avocado website (opens in new tab). You simply choose the size and desired firmness. The toppers ship via FedEx and setting up is as easy as unboxing and plopping it on top of your mattress (in-Home delivery and set-up are not available for this product).  The mattress topper is dense and a bit heavy, but nothing I couldn’t handle on my own - I’m 5'3" and, while I do teach Pilates and am in generally good shape, I’m certainly not buff and I still found it manageable. After laying the topper over my Avocado mattress, I added a mattress protector to keep my topper and mattress clean, followed by a sheet, and the setup was complete!

Avocado warranty and trial period

You can sleep on your new mattress topper for up to a year before deciding whether it’s right for you, beginning the day you receive it. The only catch is that Avocado asks customers to give their new mattress or topper at least 30 days before requesting a return. Should you wish to proceed with a return after 30 days, they will work with you to arrange everything, free of charge. While year-long trials are pretty common for mattresses, a full year to try out a mattress topper is pretty rare, especially when some companies do not accept returns once it’s out of the box.  The Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper is also covered by the company’s 10-year limited warranty.

Is the Avocado Mattress Topper worth it?

If you’re looking for an organic mattress topper that is made without any harmful chemicals, the Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper is a very comfortable option. You can support a product that is good for the environment without sacrificing a good night’s sleep with this topper, so you can have your cake and eat it too - and maybe even eat that cake while luxuriating on your newly revived mattress thanks to Avocado’s firm or plush options.
